Folks are concerned about AI taking their jobs. For a while, musicians felt pretty secure because, who could have predicted that computers would start replicating such a sensitive art as music?
Now, musicians are shaken and they don’t know what will happen next as tone-deaf people start making songs with AI hoping to make money just like all those people who actually know what they are doing musically. But, I don’t think there is that much to worry about. Sure, it may create a new genre of music that people actually like, but it will never take away the place of real people.
Think about it. Any time anything artificial has ever come about, the market for the natural version stayed around. In some areas, the natural version did become obscure for a while but then folks started to reap the consequences of artificial food for example. Now, the healthy, natural food market is growing again while artificial additives are continuously being advertised against. I predict the same will happen in the music industry.
I used Suno, an AI music generation app, to create several songs. The first few were humorous, and I found myself hooked. Not gonna lie, I thought I was holding the demise of music in the palm of my hand. I was scared. My life’s work was about to be wasted in front of my eyes!
I kept generating song after song, and sharing the app with friends. Not long after that, I started noticing the same patterns over and over again. AI music began to be so recognizable that I was almost disgusted with it. At that point, my hope was restored. It obviously couldn’t figure out how to connect words in the music to abstract emotions that could move my heart.
I tried another approach and wrote lyrics then put them through the AI platform and was even farther from impressed at its job of capturing my emotions. It did serve to give me ideas for musical themes I could incorporate into my own melody. That is where I think AI will come handy, to overcome writer’s block.
